Bait are a German blackened hardcore band and this is their debut album. Featuring a member of Der Weg Einer Freiheit, Bait play post-black metal with hardcore bite. Offering 45 minutes of aggressive darkness, Revelation of the Pure is a worthy listen. The band’s music contains various elements that are wrapped around a dark, blackened heart. Hardcore, sludge, and doom all get used in the band’s quest for violent intensity. The hardcore influences power the music forward, while the blackened elements coat everything like a malignant miasma. There’s atmosphere here too, not just violence; Bait’s vicious delivery is augmented with mood-driven force and threatening menace. The songs are brutal in a sleek, predatory way. Well-written and filled with malevolent creativity, the music is engaging and enjoyable. Drawing you in further with each repeat listen, the album grows over time like an oncoming storm. Understated melody is used well, and the band’s use of dynamics and texture serves them well across the album. If you imagine Converge mixed with bands like Hexis, Celeste, and Regarde les Hommes Tomber, then you’ll have a rough idea of a starting point for Revelation of the Pure.
